Sending your existing and potential customers newsletters is a great way to let them know more about your business, remember your brand, and outperform your competitors. When done right, it can increase sales and drive traffic to your website. Although it isn’t easy to do, here are tips to remember as you start marketing via newsletters.

1. Write a good subject line

The subject line is the first thing your readers look at before opening your newsletters. A good subject line can be anything so write it in a short, unique, witty, and intriguing phrase. This is to make your newsletter stand out above the other emails your recipients receive.

So focus on making your reader curious once they open their inbox and invite them to read your message. But remember to avoid writing salesy subject lines and using too many exclamation points. It will make you sound spammy and desperate.

2. Write a good opening line

After reading the subject line, your newsletter recipients will then open your newsletter and read the opening line. If the subject line is the bait, the opening line is the hook to reel the readers in further. Opening lines should be short enough to give the reader an idea of what the rest of your newsletter is but not giving everything. The goal is to make them continue reading.

You can present a problem they can relate to or introduce them to concepts they don’t know yet. For example, if your newsletter is about businesses that they can start under a hundred dollars, then write your opening line like this: “Can’t start a business due to a lack of startup capital? Take inspiration from these $100 and below business ideas.”

3. Add visuals

Don’t forget to add images in the body of your newsletters. Visuals help make your content pop. They don’t only add appeal to your newsletters, but they also reinforce the message of your content and help your readers remember your piece.

When the readers come across a problem in the future that your newsletter has provided a solution to, the first thing they’ll do is to use your newsletter as a reference. You can choose from these free image sources.

4. Pick a newsletter goal and stick to it

When your goal for writing the newsletter is to drive sales then write everything in a way that convinces your recipient to buy the product. For example, if you’re selling face masks, make your newsletter look like this:

  • Subject line: Mask up!
  • Opening line: Here’s a mask that you’ll love to wear.
  • Newsletter body:

Made from eco-friendly materials.

Highly adjustable.

More durable, more fashionable, and more comfortable on the face with a denser filter for more protection without reducing your oxygen intake.

Newsletters don’t always have to be about sales. Your newsletter can be for educational purposes and building your customer pool as well. Here’s what it would look like:

  • Subject line: Getting sun.
  • Opening line: These are the reasons why you should get some sun every day.
  • Newsletter body:

You sleep early at night. (Image)

You improve your sleep quality (Image)

Reduces your stress. (Image)

Strengthens your immune system. (Image)
