How to Focus On What’s Within Your Control (Mental Health Tips for Business Owners)

  • Comments Off on How to Focus On What’s Within Your Control (Mental Health Tips for Business Owners)

“Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle: Some things are within our control, and some things are not”- Epictetus, The Art of Living

A simple downturn in your business decisions can have a catastrophic effect on your mind. And your stress can be exacerbated by the things that you have no power over. As a result, you start to worry and feel helpless or scared. But that doesn’t have to be the case.

You can work through those negative thoughts and stay positive despite the idea that some things are out of your control. In fact, by accepting that you can’t manage everything and focusing on what’s within your control, you can start to shift your energy to the right place. This will make you feel more confident and empowered.

So how do you focus on the things that are within your control? Here are strategies that help you to have a more positive state of mind.

1. Make a list

Our worries may come from the fact that we don’t know what we’re capable of. As a result, we get overwhelmed and lose our focus. So take a step back and use your time to make a list of things that you can and can’t control.

Some things that you can’t control are your past, accidents, or the people around you. But the things that you can control include your mindset, how you move forward, and how you communicate with other people.

As you make this list, you’ll realize that many things are within your grasp. Occasionally, review this list to remind you when you feel discouraged by everything that’s going on in your life.

2. Practice mindfulness

Once you list the things you can’t control, you need to accept that you can’t do anything about them. And that it’s perfectly normal because we are not God.

Instead, remember the things that you can control. Being present and aware of the things around you helps you focus. Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings. Ultimately, breathe and allow yourself to relax.

3. Set realistic goals

It’s good to aim high for the success of your business. However, when you set goals that are outside your control, you may not be able to achieve them, making you feel discouraged. It is important to plan according to your current resources, skills, and abilities.

4. Follow your plan

Follow a plan to make you feel in control of your success. If you encounter challenges, ask yourself if you can do something about them.

Whether in your business or your life, remember that you don’t have to be alone. Make a team that will help you manage everything and support your endeavors.

Conclusion

All of the things above are easier said than done. So if you tend to worry about everything, just take a few short steps. For example, you may start by just meditating and making that list. Then once you’ve mastered that, you can move forward to other things.
