How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome as an Entrepreneur

  • Comments Off on How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome as an Entrepreneur

Do you constantly question yourself when managing or growing your business? If yes, chances are you’re suffering from imposter syndrome. But don’t worry, you are not alone.

Many entrepreneurs are susceptible to self-doubt when it comes to achieving something. As a result, they constantly worry that they won’t meet expectations. This is imposter syndrome, and it can affect everyone, including entrepreneurs like you.

What Is Imposter Syndrome Anyway, and How Does It Affect Entrepreneurs?

Imposter syndrome or perceived fraudulence is when you feel self-doubt and incompetence despite your education, experience, and achievements. You feel like a fraud or worry that you’re not good enough despite the affirmations from your colleagues or friends. This feeling can cause you to miss out on opportunities that you deserve.

Entrepreneurs at every level, from small business owners to executive officers, are more likely to experience imposter syndrome because they’re taking financial risks in order to start or operate their businesses.

In addition, entrepreneurs rely on their confidence to make a living which causes a heightened self-awareness. So, even though they’re competent, they tend to spot small mistakes and downplay their achievements.

If you feel you have imposter syndrome, don’t panic. There are many ways to deal with imposter syndrome, and here are some of them.

1. Talk about your feelings

It’s natural and normal to experience imposter syndrome as you grow, so try to embrace it. Acknowledge that you’re not perfect. Be aware of your feelings and what’s going on. Once you’re aware, you can ask yourself why you are feeling them and what your triggers are.

Even if you’re aware of your feelings, you cannot solve them alone. Talk to your families and friends because that’s what they are for — to be your cheerleaders. Surround yourself with people who support you. If you cannot praise yourself, at least know that there are people who will make you feel positive and affirm your skills and achievements.

2. Recognize your achievements

Aside from the affirmation of the people around you, you also need to try to praise yourself. Replace those negative-self talk with positive and encouraging words. Celebrate your achievements, even the small ones.

Maybe you got past those failures, or you started to make a profit. Perhaps you launched your campaign ad successfully, or you expanded your team. All of those things are worthy of a celebration. Do not downplay your success. You worked hard for it, so you deserve to pat yourself on the back.

3. Avoid comparing yourself to others.

Each of us has unique abilities. It’s okay if you may take a little longer to master some skills while others seem to master them immediately. It’s good to take note of other people’s positive attitudes and strategies. You can use their strategies to improve your own but don’t compare yourself to their success. Instead, focus on yourself and how to improve, even if it’s just a tiny step toward your goals.

4. Accept that failure is part of your journey to success.

When entrepreneurs with imposter syndrome experience failure, they often feed their minds with more self-doubt and discouragement. But you need to understand that failure is part of your journey as an entrepreneur. So instead of feeling overwhelmed, take a pause and use this as an opportunity to grow. Learn from your mistakes and try again until you do it right.

Conclusion

Note that you cannot overcome the feeling of imposter syndrome overnight, so be kind to yourself. Be realistic and know your strengths and weaknesses. It may be a challenging journey to the top, but never lose sight of your own worth.
