How to Come up with the Perfect Name for Your Business

  • Comments Off on How to Come up with the Perfect Name for Your Business

Finding that perfect name for your startup or solopreneur business can be an overwhelming experience. Your business name is extremely important because it’s how people will be able to recognize you, recommend you, and do repeat business with you. Your business name will be carried by your marketing materials – business cards, email, website, and more.

In today’s article, I will show you a few helpful ideas on how you should name your business (if you don’t have one yet). Together, we’ll get your name right so that your audience will think of you in a positive way.

Tips and Considerations for Choosing the Perfect Business Name

1. Use your own name

You can brainstorm many other names, but the easiest and probably the best way to go is to choose your own name. Your own name will make you so memorable. It reflects your personal reputation and makes your brand “more human.”

2. It should have a meaning

The moment people hear your business name, they should be able to tell what it’s all about. Don’t leave people guessing. When the name conveys a message, it should also convey the right one. However, you need to be careful not to make your business name so generic that it’ll lack uniqueness.

3. Make a spelling mistake on purpose

Some solopreneurs like to portray themselves as creative. This is especially true with niches that involve hobbies such as gaming, gardening, writing, and music. You can drop vowels or replace consonants. A good example would be Neville Medhora’s Kopywriting Kourse.

4. Avoid names that are hard to spell

A practical tip would be to steer clear of a business name that’s quite hard to spell when uttered by mouth. The purpose of this is to keep things simple. I know some companies that excelled even with hard-to-spell names like Quora and Flickr. At the end of the day, it’s up to you to decide. Just choose wisely!

5. Use online resources

If you run out of creative juices or need some inspiration, the internet can be the perfect resource. I’ve made a list of five brand name generators that are useful especially if you’re planning to start a website soon:

  • Shopify business name generator
  • Bust A Name
  • Name Station
  • Namelix
  • Oberlo business name generator

6. Make sure that you’re happy with it

As the business owner, you should be the first person to say that your business name is truly worth it. Remember that you’ll be living with it for a long time. If possible, don’t involve anyone (whether that’s your team or family) in choosing your business name. Take all the time you need to test and validate it.

Final Thoughts

I hope that these tips help you in deciding the perfect name for your business. If you ask me whether I recommend trademarking your business name, my answer would be yes. Doing so will give you an exclusive right to use your name nationwide. Also, you decrease the chances of your name getting used by others. Good luck with your planning!
