Happiness is something we all strive for in life, yet it can often feel elusive. One reason for this is that we can sometimes sabotage our own happiness without even realizing it. 

It’s like we have an internal saboteur who whispers negative thoughts and self-limiting beliefs in our ears. Fortunately, there are ways to stop doing this and start living a more joyful life that leads to success and prosperity.

Practice Self-Compassion

One of the biggest ways we sabotage our happiness is by being too hard on ourselves. We set impossibly high standards and then beat ourselves up when we inevitably fall short. 

Instead, try practicing self-compassion. This means treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer to a good friend. When you make a mistake, remind yourself that everyone makes mistakes and that it’s okay to be human! This can help you let go of self-judgment and cultivate a more positive outlook.

Challenge Negative Self-Talk

Another way we sabotage our happiness is by engaging in negative self-talk. This is the voice in our head that tells us we’re not good enough, smart enough, or attractive enough. These thoughts can be incredibly damaging to our self-esteem and can prevent us from pursuing our dreams. 

To stop this kind of self-sabotage, try challenging your negative self-talk. When you hear a negative thought, ask yourself if it’s really true. Often, you’ll find that these thoughts are based on unfounded fears or self-doubt. By questioning them, you can begin to reframe your thinking in a more positive light.

Set Realistic Goals

Setting goals is important for achieving happiness and success, but it’s important to make sure those goals are realistic. If you set goals that are too ambitious, you may set yourself up for failure and feel discouraged. 

On the other hand, if you set goals that are too easy, you may feel bored and unchallenged. To find the right balance, try setting goals that are challenging but achievable. This will help you build confidence and feel a sense of accomplishment as you work toward your goals!

Surround Yourself with Positivity

The people we surround ourselves with can have a big impact on our happiness. If you’re constantly surrounded by negativity, it can be difficult to maintain a positive outlook. 

To combat this, try surrounding yourself with positivity. Spend time with people who uplift and inspire you, and avoid those who bring you down. This can include friends, family members, coworkers, or even online communities. When you surround yourself with positivity, it can help you cultivate a more optimistic mindset.

Focus on the present moment 

Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and fully engaged with your surroundings. When we’re mindful, we’re less likely to get caught up in negative thoughts or worries about the future. This can help us feel more grounded and content in the present moment. 

To practice mindfulness, try setting aside a few minutes each day to focus on your breath or engage in a mindful activity like yoga or meditation. Over time, this can help you cultivate a more mindful and peaceful mindset.

Don’t Forget to Take Care of Yourself

Finally, it’s important to take care of yourself if you want to stop sabotaging your own happiness. This means getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly. 

When we take care of our physical health, it can have a big impact on our mental and emotional well-being. It’s also important to take time for self-care activities that make you feel happy and relaxed, like taking a bubble bath, reading a book, or spending time in nature.
